Kyocera Wireless and Runcom Complete Industry-First MIMO-Powered WiMAX Connection Using Jointly-Developed PC Card

San Diego, USA and Rishon Lezion, Israel - Kyocera Wireless Corp., a leading global supplier of CDMA wireless devices and accessories, and Runcom Technologies, the pioneer in OFDMA® enabling technologies for Mobile WiMAX, yesterday announced that they have achieved what is believed to be the first MIMO-powered data connection using innovative WiMAX antenna technology.

MIMO-powered WiMAX uses multiple antennas to deliver mobile services three to five times faster than today’s wireless broadband cellular networks, and at a much lower cost to carriers.

The MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) data connection was completed in a lab environment using a PCMCIA card from Kyocera Wireless powered by Runcom’s WiMAX Matrix-B chipset. This successful test demonstrates the commercial viability of MIMO-powered WiMAX for networks and end-user devices, and the prototype PC card is now in trials with leading infrastructure providers.

“MIMO-powered WiMAX gives us the rare ability to further the paradigm shift in the way carriers and service providers deliver unbridled access to content, creating a whole new mindset about what the mobile user experience should be,” said Dave Carey, vice president of strategic planning, Kyocera Wireless Corp. “By extending the bounds of technology, Kyocera Wireless’ leadership is enabling a bridge between Runcom and globally-recognized infrastructure providers to make that long-awaited freedom a reality.”

MIMO-powered WiMAX addresses the requirements of bandwidth-intensive mobile applications with lower power consumption and without increasing network load and related costs for carriers. It is a significant step beyond current 3G wireless data technologies, making the mobile user experience the same as running secure access enterprise applications in the office, playing graphic-rich interactive games on the home PC, or even watching a favorite show on the living room couch.

“Leading edge WiMAX technology will allow mobile customers to enjoy enhanced communication services without sacrificing the flexibility and dependability that they have come to expect from their devices and networks,” said Dr Zion Hadad, CEO, Runcom.
