NEC Corporation has been selected as a vendor for the development and manufacture of Super 3G wireless base station equipment to be used in new commercial services offered by NTT DoCoMo, Inc.

Super3G is a standard system and an advanced version of the W-CDMA-extended technologies HSDPA(1) and HSUPA(2). The system, which achieves outstanding data transmission speeds of 100Mbps or more in downlink and 50Mbps or more in uplink access, is designed to reduce delays in data transmission and improve frequency usage efficiency.

Super3G has been under discussion by the W-CDMA standardization organization 3GPP(3) as part of “Long Term Evolution”(4), and most of the main specifications have been determined. NEC plays a central role in these standardization activities, having dispatched two Vice-Chairmen and numerous other participating members.

NEC has been providing NTT DoCoMo with infrastructure systems for some time as a leading total mobile solutions provider. The solutions range from mobile handsets and i-mode(TM)(5) service platforms to core networks and wireless base stations. In addition, NEC has already been selected as a vendor for Super3G mobile handsets.
